Healthcare webinar by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for Medication Without Harm - How Digital Healthcare Tools Can Support Providers and Improve Patient Safety
Medication Without Harm - How Digital Healthcare Tools Can Support Providers and Improve Patient Safety
Medication errors are a leading cause of injury and avoidable harm in healthcare, with an estimated 1.3 million people impacted in the U.S. each year. Preventable medication errors cost the nation more than $21 billion annually across all care settings, representing a serious public health concern, as well as an economic burden on our healthcare system. Join AHRQ’s expert panel of speakers to hear how quality improvement approaches and digital healthcare interventions such as clinical decision support tools are reducing medication errors, improving provider effectiveness, and enhancing patient safety in a variety of clinical care settings. CE/CME accreditation of this activity is pending; if approved, eligible providers can earn up to 1.5 CE/CME contact hours for participating in the live webinar.Learning Objectives:At the conclusion of this Webinar, participants should be able to:• Discuss how an e-prescribing tool can reduce medication discrepancies and improve patient safety by enhancing communication between pharmacists and providers.• Identify how clinical decision support systems can significantly reduce the prescribing of potentially inappropriate medications to older patients at the time of discharge from the emergency department setting.• Explain how outcome measures, such as the Wrong-Patient Retract-and-Reorder measure, can be developed and used to detect medication errors in electronic orders.Speakers: Samantha Pitts, M.D., M.P.H. (Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine), Camille P. Vaughan, M.D., M.S. (Director, Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics & Gerontology, Emory School of Medicine), Jason Adelman, M.D., M.S. (Director, Associate Dean for Quality and Patient Safety, Center for Patient Safety Science, Columbia University).Moderator: James Swiger, M.B.E. (Health Scientist Administrator, Division of Digital Healthcare Research, Center for Evidence and Practice Improvement, AHRQ).

Healthcare webinar by Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Society for A Nucleic Acid Approach to Antibody Therapeutics
A Nucleic Acid Approach to Antibody Therapeutics
Monoclonal antibodies represent a highly successful class of therapeutics that are used to treat complex diseases across a wide range of therapeutic areas. However, their high cost and variable patient response underscores the need for new modalities that can be used to activate or suppress the immune system. Aptamers have long been viewed as a simpler alternative to antibodies, but challenges with biostability, effectiveness, and throughput have slowed their progress in the clinic. In this talk, I will discuss a path for democratizing antibody therapeutics that relies a class of molecules called threomers, which are highly functionalized synthetic nucleic acids assembled on a biologically stable threose nucleic acid (TNA) framework. I will describe the underlying chemistry and enzyme engineering developed to support a high throughput discovery pipeline and provide examples of recently discovered threomers that mirror the binding properties of antibodies.Speaker: John Chaput, PhD, Professor - University of California, Irvine

Wellness webinar by Duke-NUS Medical School for CARE Experts Webinar: Examining implications of widowhood on well-being: Results and Challenges
CARE Experts Webinar: Examining implications of widowhood on well-being: Results and Challenges
Losing a partner is a life-changing experience. We draw on numerous datasets to examine differences between widowed and partnered older women and to provide a comprehensive picture of well-being in widowhood. Most importantly, our analysis accounts for time use in widowhood, an aspect which has not been studied previously. Based on data from several European countries we trace the evolution of well-being of women who become widowed by comparing them with their matched non-widowed ‘statistical twins’ and examine the role of an exceptionally broad set of potential moderators of widowhood’s impact on well-being. We confirm a dramatic decrease in mental health and life satisfaction after the loss of a partner, followed by a slow recovery. An extensive set of controls recorded prior to widowhood, including detailed family ties and social networks, provides little help in explaining the deterioration in well-being. Unique data from time-diaries kept by older women from several European countries and the U.S. tell us why: the key factor behind widows’ reduced well-being is increased time spent alone.Presented by Dr. Michal Myck, Director, Centre for Economic Analysis, CenEA.

Healthcare webinar by SelectScience for Specific IgG diagnostics in hypersensitivity pneumonitis
Specific IgG diagnostics in hypersensitivity pneumonitis
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), also known as extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA), is an immune-mediated interstitial lung disease triggered by inhaled antigens such as molds, bird feathers, and agricultural dusts. Often linked to working conditions, HP is a disease of many faces, from inflammatory self-limiting disease to relapsing or progressive inflammatory disease and chronic fibrotic disease. As there does not exist a single, universal diagnostic criterion, HP is diagnosed by a combination of findings established through clinical history, including imaging, histopathology, pulmonary function testing, bronchoscopy, and serology. With the rise of automated immunoassays capable of quantitatively measuring specific IgG to common HP antigens, an expanded diagnostic can be used to detect the potential triggering antigen. This webinar delves into the pathophysiology of HP, highlights the diagnostic criteria according to the current guidelines, and emphasizes the utility of specific IgG determination and the importance of cutoff values in HP.Key learning objectives:Describe the pathophysiology of hypersensitivity pneumonitisExplain the diagnostic criteria used to establish HPDiscuss the value of serology in HPAccreditation statementSelectScience is approved as a provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences by the ASCLS P.A.C.E.® Program.Presenters: Dora Wells (Editorial Team, SelectScience) and Dr. Johannes Grosch (Clinical Expert, Siemens Healthineers).
