Defending the Ballot Box: What It Takes to Digitally Protect an Election
With a new election around the corner and last election's voting dramas still in our minds, security concerns around digital voting booths are at an all time high. Not only does a democracy require a secure voting system to function at all, but the voting public must be able to feel confident that the election has been handled safely and honestly. Without this trust, our nation’s public institutions could find themselves vulnerable. Despite concerns about criminal interference, a software-powered ballot box remains the most efficient and accessible form of voting that we have – and one that doesn’t look like it will go away any time soon. So how can we strengthen this system and foster confidence in the voting system? What does a truly secure ballot box look like? And is this something that should be modernized or improved upon for future elections? Join hosts Dan Lohrmann and Earl Duby in this election-themed episode of CISO Insights, to hear them and their expert guests take a sharp look at defending the ballot box.

Public Sector > Government webinar by The International Institute for Strategic Studies for Changes in Japan’s defence industry
Changes in Japan’s defence industry
In December 2022, Japan adopted its National Security Strategy, along with the National Defence Strategy and the Defence Buildup Program. In these revisions, one of Tokyo's main focuses is the development of its domestic defence industry, which is an integral part of its defence capability.Japan has implemented various policies to develop its domestic defence industry. Tokyo has announced that it will increase its national security-related spending to 2% of GDP by 2027 and in October 2023 the government introduced the Basic Policy on Enhancing Defence Production and Technology Bases. Foreign cooperation is also part of Tokyo’s efforts to develop modernised technologies for the Japan Self-Defense Forces. In December 2022, Japan, the UK, and Italy announced the Global Combat Air Programme to jointly develop a next-generation combat aircraft by 2035. Despite these efforts, Japan’s defence industry faces challenges such as supply-chain risks and a number of companies exiting the domestic defence industry. In addition, export restrictions, including the Three Principles on Transfer of Defence Equipment and Technology, limit the competitiveness of Japanese defence companies in the international market. In this IISS webinar, the panellists will discuss Japan’s recent shift in defence industry policy and its implications for national security. It will also cover the challenges Japan faces in the international defence market to examine the outlook for Japan’s defence policy.Speakers: MICHISHITA Narushige, OUE Sadamasa, SUMOMO Sayako and Robert WARD.

Public Sector > Government webinar by Global Government Forum for How to eliminate the gender pay gap in civil and public services
How to eliminate the gender pay gap in civil and public services
Some countries require businesses to publicly report their gender pay gaps annually in a bid to put pressure on those that have a big gap to close and to help jobseekers decide which companies to work for. But what of the gender pay gap in civil and public services themselves? Governments need to take action to address their own pay gaps if they are to demonstrate commitment to gender equality and lead by example. But even in countries where women account for an almost equal number of senior positions in government departments, the pay gap remains – revealing a deeper story.

The rise of EV misinformation, and how to tackle it
You’re invited to join a Clean Energy Canada webinar on the rise of EV misinformation and how to tackle it. Clean Energy Canada’s communications director, Trevor Melanson, director of public affairs, Joanna Kyriazis, and manager of reports and outreach, Keri McNamara, will be joined by Globe and Mail car critic Matt Bubbers and Electric Mobility Canada’s Daniel Breton to discuss the myths and misinformation surrounding electric vehicles, what’s in store for the future, and how we might turn the tide of public perception. A recent study of climate-related YouTube videos found that climate denial is giving way to a new kind of climate delay tactic: the discrediting of climate solutions like EVs. This trend has had a helping hand from often well-intentioned but ultimately unbalanced reporting on electric vehicles, especially compared to gas cars. Join us as we explore the communications headwinds facing the shift to electric transportation—and how we can and must overcome them. The presentation will be followed by a discussion in which attendees can put their questions to panelists. Join us at 10am PT/1pm ET on March 12 as experts in the field offer informed insight and myth-busting information on EVs.
