Inclusive communication considers word choice, formatting, image selection, and the accessibility of your content to all audiences. The term “accessibility” is commonly misunderstood or defined so broadly that it can be difficult for some people to make improvements.

40% of Higher Education (HE) students in the UK are commuter students: students who continue to live at home while studying, rather than moving into student accommodation. However, commuter students remain largely invisible, in HE pedagogy, policy and processes. HEI operations, including assessments, extra-curricular activities, facilities, learning support, pedagogy and timetabling, continue to be structured around and provided on the assumption that students live on or near to campus. There is growing evidence to suggest that these are neither accessible nor suitable for students who need to travel to access their learning, support, resources and academic community, because they are provided at a time and in a place that assumes that students live on or near to campus. The presentation presents the case for adapting pedagogy, policy and processes to better meet the needs of commuter students. It is argued that this can be achieved without disadvantaging residential students. The presentation draws upon ongoing research at Canterbury Christ Church University, which has revealed the true extent of commuting, considering its causes and consequences for the individual and the environment. The presentation will present the case for greater attention to commuter students and hopes to inspire discussion regarding wider institutional changes that may be necessary as we acknowledge the decline of the residential model in the widening participation era.

Leading Schoolwide SEL: Preparing for the Journey Ahead. Winter 2024: Four-Part Live Virtual Workshop Series. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is gaining momentum and the demand for an educational approach that centers on the needs of the whole child continues to grow. Join us for a four-part virtual workshop series to build a plan for systemic SEL implementation in your school community. This workshop is for school leaders, administrators, SEL team members, and those interested in leading schoolwide SEL implementation. Workshop sessions include establishing a shared understanding of systemic SEL, strengthening adult SEL, promoting SEL for students, and implementing your plan. The DPS Foundation’s Newcomer Student & Family Fund will work to ensure new DPS families are supported as they enter the Denver community so that newcomer students have the resources they need to become leaders and societal contributors. With the trust of the community, DPS Foundation will ensure the funds go to the area of greatest need to support schools, DPS Community Hubs and wrap-around services to ensure refugees, migrants and DPS families so they have what they need to thrive.

A recent survey by Bay View Analytics shows that the majority of students are worried about meeting the cost of their course materials. Additionally, students report that the cost of course materials have academic consequences including getting poorer grades, failing courses, and even affecting their choice of major or institution. This webinar will review the results from the recently completed Pennsylvania student survey on course material costs. The survey also included a national sample, providing a benchmark for comparing Pennsylvania's response rates to the broader trends in course material costs, academic choices, and preferences. The student responses will be reviewed before moving into a panel discussion about the impact of these costs on students. The panelists will also discuss how these results can help support advocacy efforts at their institution and statewide.
