Environment webinar by Centre for Safe Air for Diabetes and air pollution
Diabetes and air pollution
1.5 million Australians – almost five percent of the population – live with diabetes. While links with obesity and diet are well known, air pollution is also a significant modifiable risk factor. In 2021, nearly 10% of diabetes related deaths in Australia were attributed to air pollution. In this webinar researchers will present findings regarding the links between diabetes and air pollution, and what this tells us about how to reduce diabetes in Australia: Professor Joachim Heinrich, Head of Population Studies at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich; and Yiwen Zhang, PhD candidate and member of the Climate, Air Quality Research in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University. The webinar and a live Q&A will be facilitated by Dr Sabrina Idrose, Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Safe Air, Melbourne University.

Climate Change webinar by republicEn for Glacial: The Inside Story of Climate Politics
Glacial: The Inside Story of Climate Politics
From mavericks to party standard-bearers, U.S. Senators, members of the House of Representatives, and presidential candidates have campaigned for four decades espousing their intentions to address the impacts of climate change.Glacial: The Inside Story of Climate Politics is the first Inside-the-Beltway account to lay bare the machinations of what went wrong in Washington—how and why our leaders failed to act on climate change as mounting scientific evidence underscored the urgency to do so. Glacial tells a story of behind-the-scenes infighting and power struggles that blocked or derailed federal legislative progress on climate change, even in times of bipartisanship and with polls showing most Americans favored action.“It’s hard to capture 60 years of federal efforts to understand and respond to climate change, but Chelsea expertly takes us through each decade, highlighting the unlikely champions who gave it their all—both in front of the camera and behind the scenes—to solve this global threat. You might think you know everything there is to know about the politics of climate change, but Glacial likely will give you new insights.”—Former South Carolina Congressman Bob InglisThis is a free event.Register now!Event Speaker: Chelsea HendersonChelsea has worked in environmental policy on Capitol Hill for more than 25 years, seeking bipartisan solutions to the threats of climate change. Environment webinar by Centre for Safe Air for Air pollution, kids and schools
Air pollution, kids and schools
Children are especially vulnerable to air pollution which can have both acute and long-term impacts on their health and wellbeing.Allergies, asthma and the airborne transmission of infectious diseases are the most visible impacts of air pollution for children under 15 years of age. However, beginning in the womb, children can be exposed to air pollution that impacts their long-term respiratory, cardiovascular, and cognitive health in ways that are less obvious.Improving air quality in the settings where children spend much of their time—such as schools, playgrounds and in the home—represents an important opportunity for improving health outcomes for Australians across the life course. In this webinar, we hear from air quality researchers and public health professionals with a particular focus on improving children’s health: Dr Amanda Wheeler, Senior Research Scientist CSIRO, and Associate Investigator at the Centre for Safe Air; Hayley Dyke, Medical Lead for Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response, Centre of Disease Control, NT HealthThe webinar and Q&A will be moderated by Dr Sabrina Idrose, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Safe Air and Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne.

Join the webinar to learn about the challenges and opportunities for the mission-oriented implementation of climate adaptation and sustainable cities. This webinar will discuss various strategies and solutions for creating sustainable cities and adapting to climate change.Currently, there are significant differences in the level of understanding mission-based set-up and implementation of climate adaptation and Climate Neutral and Smart Cities. This does not only apply to the Western Balkans, but also core European Union regions. Therefore, projects are needed that minimise these differences and help to set up an effective mission management model. Elena Simion, UEFSCIDI, presents how the project HARMONMISSIONS addresses this challenge in the Danube Region. She highlights approaches to build the necessary knowledge capacities and governance models to enable for an effective advancement towards EU Mission goals. Opportunities for cooperation with Western Balkans are discussed.Speaker: Elena Simion, International Project Expert, UEFSCDI

Disaster Preparedness webinar by WADEM for Health System Surge Capacity and Response to a Sudden Conflict
Health System Surge Capacity and Response to a Sudden Conflict
At 06:29 on 7 October 2023, Hamas forces attacked southern Israel from Gaza. The attacks resulted in over 3,000 casualties (wounded and dead) who were brought to hospitals, created a massive surge of patients, and pushed the capacity of hospitals to respond in the area to the brink. That day was a national holiday, and most healthcare facilities had reduced staffing. The first casualties arrived within an hour at the two closest medical facilities (level 1 and level 2 trauma centers), located approximately 40 and 20 km from the attacked sites. The Ministry of Health (MoH) Emergency Operation Center (EOC) and the Home Front Command (HFC) coordinated patient management and transfers in and between hospitals and field evacuations by ambulances and military forces. The inflow of casualties to the hospitals under rocket attack, the absence of staff, and the distance from other medical facilities in the country created challenges for the local staff and the MoH. This presentation will provide an initial analysis of what happened, provide insights from the management level, and share lessons learned.Speaker: Odeda Benin-Goren, PhD (CEO of ODRON)
